Title: Whisper in the Dark
Client: Global Citizen
Studio: DC Film & Animation
My roles: Artwork, Motion Design & Animation
Many people who have known me long enough will know I used to direct music videos as a side gig for very many years. I’d been around a lot of the London goth scene, my black shirts being the last hint at this not so hidden past. In the early 2010s I made a lot of indie band videos that had done well in the dying days of music TV and grew a cult following for my slight noire stylings, occasionally veering into sci-fi. With my motion design career building, I wanted to try and offer some of these clients something that introduced them to my animation work, which was about two thirds of my work, but so much was buried under NDAs I needed something people could watch. I decided an obvious way in would be to offer lyric videos and inevitably there were one or two I couldn’t resist adding more animation to and getting a bit carried away, to the delight of many of my clients.
This is such an example. Made for a song that was very outside of the usual style of industrial act Global Citizen, the story follows a character based on lead sing Rich Mills as he feels alone after the loss of his partner, eventually finding connection with a stray cat. It has a cat in so it did quite well on views and was well received.
